Making sense of blogging and social media

In The Salt Range

The Salt Range derives its name from extensive deposits of rock salt. It stands as remnant of forts with bastions and temples. Exceptionally, this region maintains an almost continuous record of history that can define the evolution of society. Forts and temples surviving along the range are a reminder of how untouched many of the ancient remnants are. Alexander from Macedon came to this range twice: one from Taxila and later once his forces refused to go any further from the banks of the River Beas. From here he marched towards the Arabian Sea on his way to Babylon. And, now an NGO is constructing the monument of Alexander near Jalalpur town in the foot of the salt range in district Jhelum.

For those who take their first chance to the area, the landscape all along the Salt Range is rock-strewn, lacking in softness and loveliness. In many parts, it becomes barren and uninviting. But, in truth the range is dotted with historical wonders, romantic legends, archaeological remains, and varying geological formations. Surroundings are very quiet. Urial is also found in the range though facing extinction. A journey along the range is exiting as well as informative.

Pakistani Bloggers on Making Money Online

Earning money online is one of the fast growing modules these days. Everyone is trying to earn while “working from home” as they call. Most of those who are “in” are trying to earn by telling us how to earn serious money online using the Internet. They also publish proofs of the revenues they generate; may be for ego boasting or trying to authenticate what they are saying. I have been exploring in my own quest to learn if there is any substance to “earning while still at college.”

One thing that is very obvious; there is no harm in learning and trying. But claiming to sell “the secret of earning” is a little too much. Anyone who has some interest online knows what opportunities exist and how they can be taken. Have a product and or service and sell, teaching, writing, affiliates, AdSense, PPCs and PPAs, eBays (list goes on and on) are all open secrets.

What Matters Most, Men or Machines

Developments in computer technologies, in the past decades, have had their impact on human life in more than one way. But where this increasing interaction between human beings and computers is leading and how is it defining the focus of research in the field are some of the valid fields of study that are likely to make difference in human lives in future.

The emergence of information technology (IT), the availability of the web, and the user friendly designs are rapidly increasing the use of computers. Despite odds like literacy, availability (and reliability) of phone connection and affordability, the use of computers is significantly increasing in Pakistan as well. E-mail, real-time text correspondence and voice exchange are already popular asides from word processing and spread sheets. But in Pakistan, most of the new concepts are still untested, which makes any analysis inconclusive.

No Call (or Text) is Worth Taking a Life

Walk around the streets (or drive on the road) and you will notice (I always do) the people walking on the streets, and people in their cars driving while their cell phones glues to the ears. I have even some extreme examples like a bride using cell phone while sitting in her marriage reception, people using phone on dining table, cleaners wiping the roads and taking calls or making calls, list goes on and on.

Everyone knows about the damage that can result from driving while texting or talking on the phone. If you, your family or friends text, talk or email while driving you’ve got to stop them and make them realize that no call or text is worth taking a life.

Oprah is celebrating No Phone Zone on Friday, April 30, 2010 to create awareness and spread the word. Join her and make a difference.

Technology and Culture

Norbert R.O. Pintsch

What has technology to do with culture? a question asked by many professional technology fans. A more exact consideration will however reveal, that culture is the larger dimension and technology is just a part of it. In different eras, some areas have been more influencial and in others less. This way of considering things in itself testifies to a technical way of looking at things. Technical way of thinking is characterized by representation in a manner, the roots of which are to be found in mathematical calculations. There, where abstract thought cannot be explained due to missing power of imagination, we make use of drawings in order to achieve clarity in understanding. It probably never happens that a development process runs as a straight line, rather it is more like a chaotic structure in which now and then a certain regularity becomes visible, which is lost once again after a certain period of time to once again appear as a logical pattern at a later time (see illustration below).

The Youngsters Club

By Njini King Caro

The ears of the decision-makers are often filled by sounds in the background, these coming not only from the voters but also from wise partners, who help indirectly to choose the direction of thinking. Neutrally engaged however are the children, who help the adults unintentionally, foremost being the parents, to navigate in a younger generation. Most different regimes have taken advantage of the children. Active support of the new generation is achieved by exposing the children at an early age to the new concepts.

In business terms unfortunately, we see the young consumers being educated as consumers for the advantage of the consumer goods industry. Consumption means destruction of resources, environmental damage, super filialness in various areas, it is therefore important, that the medium of the children is utilized in a positive manner and also to open their minds for the problems of the present times.

Sheerni Regiment Wins Kabaddi Championship

Going back to the unit you have belonged all your service (called as parent unit) is always a wonderful experience. Yesterday (April 23, 2010), my parent unit (35 Self Propelled Heavy  Regiment  Artillery) was here in Lahore to compete for Artillery Division Kabadi Championship - 2010 and I was there to see the finals. Meeting those who had joined as young soldier and grown professionally in front of one’s own eyes is a very fulfilling and enriching experience.

Celebrating the 35 Years of Association

It was on April 17, 1975 when young boys who have been selected to join the Pakistan Military Academy came to Kakul (Abbotabad). Thirty five years is a long time and a lot has happened during these years; most of us have retired. Members of 55 PMA get together to celebrate the association and comradeship and to relive their memories whenever they can. Annual Get Together has become one of the best kept traditions.

Thatta Kedona Reaches Out to the World

Products sold under the name of Thatta Kedona are already known in Pakistan and abroad since 1973. The hand crafted dolls in the attire of the regional provinces and minorities, in sizes of 20cm and 50cm, whereby the larger dolls have real hair, are special product of the Anjuman-e-Falah-e-Aama (NGO), which has been able to maintain the quality over the years and exhibits, collects and sells these dolls at many platforms.

The credit for this achievement goes above all to Dr. Senta Siller, the German graphic designer born in Vienna, who spent five years from 1993 to 1998 in the village of Thatta Ghulamka Dhiroka and established the NGO Anjuman-e-Falah-e-Aama, which trained about 120 women from the village in the making of these dolls. Income generating measure for the people of this rural community based upon the traditional culture.

Cameroon Construction Project

http://haatc.blogspot.com/Regarding the Construction Project
“The Royal Rehabilitation Centre” (RHC)
and
“The Royal Humanitarian Development Reformation Centre” (RHDRC)
in the north-west region of Cameroon.
The traditional forms of medicine from Africa, Asia and South America appear to enjoy a popularity even in the classic industrialized countries, where there is a growing recognition of the ancient knowledge of the east. Even the global pharmaceutical industry sends teams into far away regions to profit from the knowledge of the local people.

In Africa the Republic of Cameroon is specially known in this context due to the personal attention of HRE Ambassador Dr Simon Leshey (I), King of African Cameroon Natural Healers, and representative of the Royal Development Cooperation Foundation. He is also the founder of the RHC and the RHDRC project.

The advisors of the King recommend measures for maintaining the traditional culture while keeping in mind the general economic situation and with the aim to keep the running costs as low as possible.

It is for this reason that the traditional construction forms, local materials, using natural lighting and ventilation as well as flexibility and autonomy of the infra-structure should be utilized and promoted. These goals are not possible to be achieved through the usual western-oriented technology. The current project is therefore also in this context extremely important.

CAT (NGO) has over 10 years of local experience in the field of Appropriate Technology. The NGO has received award from the president of the republic as well as prizes also in the individual regions.

With the assistance of the advisor to HRE Ambassador Dr Simon Leshey (I) it was possible to develop a team of experts, who shall take up the described challenges.

Living in Lahore

During my service, while I lived everywhere from Karachi to Chitral but I always dreamt to settle in Lahore. This way living in Lahore is dream come true in my case. Though, sometime I think this is not that Lahore I had been dreaming about. It has changed from city of gardens, schools and universities to a very congested habitat. At Light Within, I am planning to start a series of Lahore Images that will show what attracts my attention. May be this is one f the ways to pay back to this great city.

Virtual Communities

Virtual world is seamlessly getting into real world. Social side of technologies is making the World Wide Web much more localized by bringing like-minded people together and in the process creating closely knit online communities.

Combination of features like worldwide accessibility and instantaneous communication has made it possible for backpackers, globetrotters and other curious from all over the world to join together at different online platforms to exchange information, experiences and plans in their favorite pursuit; travel.

Subscribers range from the professional travel writers to hardcore travelers and adventurers and commoners who are simply interested in reading online. Travel communities are accessible by millions of interested people all over the world.

Out of some major and hundreds of less noticeable travel forums on the Web, I have had the fortune to belong to a few and have been visiting some others for my travel information needs.

Exceptions apart, all virtual travel communities have some common features: Communities mostly provide a warm, trusting and supportive atmosphere. When members give information, they do it with great care and responsibility. They rely on each other more than they do on outdated travel guidebooks or on second hand and static information from conventional travel literature.

Visit any online community and one finds anything related to travel, along with flames and off topics, which are informative, sometimes funny or even annoying. The mutual exchange of information is not restricted only to destinations, affordable places to stay and dine in, security issues, maps, weather conditions there and where to have best bargains and how to find public restrooms or which Websites better describe any particular place. Or which dress a female anthropologist going to study Kalash clan up in northern district Chitral should wear during her extended stay there. It goes much beyond to helping in finding work, selling and promoting each others in local markets.

“Travel forums have become hunting grounds for meeting fellow travelers and making new friends. You really do not require any other reason to join a community or two,” says Atoorva Sinha who intends building up travelers’ community at Mindzwine.

Carla King is founder member of one virtual travel community called Wild Writing Women for female travelers. She emailed, “When we published Wild Writing Women -- Stories of World Travel (an anthology of women’s travel stories) -- we got a lot of publicity. People wanted to know how we traveled solo and weren’t afraid, and just how we went about it. We started giving workshops. We also started giving writing workshops and hosted a free monthly literary salon. People just gravitated, and we accepted them. We made a business of it and formed the online community. So it’s a profitable business for us to expand the community, and also, happily, it’s close to our hearts.”

Members are slow in response sometime. Chris Heidrich, the Director of a BootsnAll says, “One has to be patient in waiting for a response from members and insiders. It should be understood that it is a voluntary favor and some people do not come on board or check email as often.” Court who is always found on board in the same community adds, “Some time they may be away traveling to yet another location.”

The recipients of information have to keep in mind that what ever comes is based upon individuals’ personal experiences or empirical observations. One member may have had different experience than others. When I posted a query about Virtual Travel Communities (for this article) at BootsnAll community; the first reply referred me to Nick mediator at another community at Bali Blog who in turn advised me to email direct to all on his mailing list. The replies I am still receiving are varied showing so many perspectives. “There is nothing like variety,” says Nick.

The virtual world is composed of information rather than physical identities. Information spreads and diffuses. Those who belong to these impalpable spaces are also diffuse, free to take it or leave it.

The Pelican Brief

There is a famous axiom that everything in fiction is true except dates (and everything in history is untrue except names). This axiom seems truer in case of John Grisham. Lately I read his Pelican Brief - a legal-suspense thriller. Yes, I know it is an old novel but I enjoyed it. John Ray Grisham is an American author, best known for his popular legal thrillers. John Ray Grisham was a lawyer and politician before he turned novelist after witnessing  the harrowing testimony of a 12-year-old rape victim and that inspired him to start writing,  His books have sold over 250 million copies worldwide.

The book starts with the assassination of two Supreme Court Justices. While the public speculates about who may have killed them and why, the main character, Darby Shaw, a Tulane University Law School student, decides to research the two justices' records and cases pending before the Court, suspecting the real motive might be simple greed, not politics. She writes a legal brief (that comes to be known as Pelican brief) speculating that the assassinations were committed on behalf of Victor Mattiece, an oil tycoon wanting to drill for oil on Louisiana swamp land which is a major habitat of an endangered breed of pelicans. A court case on appeal, filed on his behalf to gain access to the land, is expected to make its way to the Supreme Court. Pelican Brief makes it way to the White House and also to the Washington Post. Both sides start independent investigation. Ultimately, all the mysteries are solved by the Post reporter and he the newspaper runs the story. But a whole lot (including killing and manipulations) happens in between. You must read the book for that.

Reading John Grisham, one starts relating things while speculating about whom the author is talking. That is is the beauty of John Grisham.

Which book have you read last and when?

Been in Noirmoutier

Every season is a vacation season. Most of us want to get out whenever we can and be at some best place to celebrate life. Given my own interest in “seeing that and being there,” I can say that Noirmoutier is one of the best ideas for any romantic vacations. Name of Noirmoutier is enough to have any vacationer dreaming. There are so many reasons to go to Noirmoutier – landscape beauty, serene environment, beaches, its 830 years old history and a cool nip in the air are naturally relaxing. Many call it just like an island but I say it is an island. It makes best setting for vacations, a romantic retreat for two or for a family with kids to have annual vacations there. It has some ting for every one.

If you are going to Noirmoutier, I suggest plan ahead and book in advance. Those who are familiar with London hotels will feel the difference while staying there.

Sour Milk Alert Jug

Milk is used in every house. It’s a must for all of us. However, milk has to be fresh to use. You may be using milk to drink, adding it to make tea or making a milk shake. If the milk is sour, it is not good for your health. If you are adding milk to make something, the sour milk will spoil everything and all goes waste provided you find out by your visual or smell judgment that it is sour. If your judgment goes wrong and you take the sour milk and serve the same to others, all users are bound to fall sick. This milk judge alert is a good household item to ensure that the milk you are using is fresh and sour.

The jug has an LCD display in front which lets you know the condition of the milk to be fresh or sour. Sour milk is more acidic and this jug picks up the same. This will certainly save you from wasting lot of milk which you may be discarding for fear of being sour and it will also help you save from falling sick by taking sour milk.

Water Bomb Factory

Playing with balloons is a favorite sport of the young children. Balloons filled with water are a greater fun to play with. Filling water in the balloon is quite a task. You have got to fix it with a water tap and later deal with the hassle of tying it up with a string or a thread. Invariably, the success rate is not good enough to boast about. Besides, the elders doing it for their children have their clothes wet to fill the balloons with water. A number of balloons get wasted too. This water bomb factory available for a paltry sum of US $ 10.00 has made the job easier and hassle free. Filling of water and tying of the balloon thereafter is done easily and quickly. You can fill ten balloons in a minute. You can do good service and offer entertainment not only to your own children but also to all children in the neighborhood. This small attachment can be hooked up to your garden hose or any other tap or the sink. You can choose from one of the two sink adapters. There is a built in table clamp and a quick knot tying arm.

Health Insurance Quotes

Insurance is important to the fabrics of society and economy. And one does not have to be an economist to know this. Insurance is something people buy hoping they never have to use. They purchase insurance to guards against unexpected and unaffordable losses. Where the purchasers really win is in the peace of mind the insurance policy buys them. If the worst should happen, insurance works to provide financial recovery. This knowledge has increased the demand for insurance services in the last couple of decades.
