In the Name of 'Threat to Democracy'
Tuesday, 29 December 2009
Every blast anywhere in Pakistan leaves us sad, depressed but I have felt more pain from the two attacks, one, attack in Rawalpindi where we lost 36 innocent people including some of my comrades and second, a suicide bomber attack on Monday that struck a Muharram procession in Karachi on Ashura, killing at least 40 people and earlier in Muzafarabad, killing 10 people from my own community. Question is what can we do in addition to feeling pain, being sad?
Despite early warnings by security agencies and despite all security measures in place, the bombing of a Muharram procession in Karachi and attack on Mosque in Rawalpindi underscore multiple security challenges facing every Pakistani. This situation seems much worst that what we hear from statesmen we have. Nor our leaders’ visibly hollow slogans can pacify the nation where everyone is living under threat of who is the next. It is about time that we all should take stock of the situation and perceive looming national as well as personal threats and act. The unfounded ‘threat to democracy’ we keep hearing about has gone a little too far this time.

This is really sad indeed - killing people who are already in mourning. And then setting ablaze shops of ordinary people. My heart bleeds
