Complexities of an Existential Love

Bookmark and Share

In addition to millions of words, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir bestowed upon intellectuals around the world a love story for the ages. They met as ardent young philosophy students in Paris and immediately declared each other soul mates.
They pledged undying troth, existentialist-style, which meant that, as self-created and totally free human agents, they would throw off bourgeois bad faith and hypocrisy. Marriage was out. Children too.

They would live and love with total transparency, sharing every secret, renouncing jealousy, exposing themselves to judgment and, in conversational marathons, analyzing every last sensation. Read more here. . .

While going through the above review of excellent (and very timely) book TÊTE-À-TÊTE, what hit the mind of a reader is this: Why this is no more possible to live and love with total transparency, sharing every secret, renouncing jealousy, exposing themselves to judgment and, in conversational marathons, analyzing every last sensation today; of course in marriage and with children? Or is it? Do we find people around us living this way or other ways? What I see is other ways, a few lucky exceptions aside.

maybe it is not possible to live and love with total transparancy because it is un natural. And ours is an imperfect world. Jealousy, betrayal, lust, greed..and all other the cardinal sins are very much there in our nature. the first crime on earth was Abel's murder by Cain out of jealousy. The article reveals that the two protagonists' existential relationship was a sham...becuase they left casualties all around they went....i dont know how they called each otehr soul mates then...maybe love itself is flawed...:)

You probably can live like this until a special point but there are special things/ secrets which I don't want to share with the rest of the world but only with my beloved one.

What a great post Shi, you knew my attention would be caught with this one....Pondering I have done and I do think you can have your soulmate and love them but you will experience all the negative emotions that can go along with love will be encountered but good communication between two can overcome it all---and will. just my thoughts are maybe what I want to believe.

To sum it up in two words, "Hypocrisy rules!"

People are not completely honest with anyone and create facades, behind which they hide, even from themselves. So, it is obvious that even the closest of relationships are built on a foundation of lies.

People run scared of those like me, who dare to point out that "The emperor has no clothes!", literally.

Love and marriage are what you make of it. Some people choose to make theirs better then others, and every once in a while you might run into that very special couple and you know that they have something so very special between them that they can truely share all and that nothing short of death will ever seperate them.
Such are those we tend to call soul-mates. I agree that they a a few lucky exceptions.

What are blog(s) to Me?

This blog is a resource for my thoughts. More often, I blog form impressions and or generate ideas to see how they invoke reactions, to keep track of others’ work in the fields of my interests, or simply to rant or point out things that come to my attention.

Also, I use blogging as a platform to prune ideas. This is where I meet others. And “I am neither geek, nor nerd, I am not a hacker, a phreaker, a programmer or any variety of technoid dweeb.”

What are blog(s) to you?

Internet is a lonely place without Blogs; a fine art and economics. Blogs are different to different people. I usually ask blogger friends to share their views on what is a blog to them?

Contribute your thoughts on blogging in general. In particular, write how you blog? Why? How blogging matters in life and work? Answer these questions and more (add what you feel is important dimension for you) and share {sajshirazi(at)gmail.com} here.
